Architecture has become too precious, limited to singular representation and servant to the egos of architects. The function and use of space should be in the control of the community because ethical design doesn’t just consider the community, it gives them autonomy. Applying the concept of rasquache, a Mexican aesthetic style of reusing “trash” in unintended and artistic ways, in architecture is an affordable way for programs to shift with changing needs. As Rem Koolhaas stated, the scope and definition of architecture has broadened, and we must explore those bounds, in this instance through clothing. The Brooklyn Banks in Manhattan is perfect for this study because of its history of reuse. The proposed program features integrated gallery, retail, and community spaces and is entirely skatable. This ties into skating’s core tenant of appropriating and repurposing space to create a unique skating experience and to challenge the idea of spatial ownership.
